Director, Finance and Operations
Position Description
Tandem Global’s Director, Finance and Operations is a member of the senior leadership and works under the supervision of the CEO to support the organization’s financial, operational, and human resource management systems, procedures, and processes. The Director plays a critical role in partnering with the senior leadership in strategic decision-making and with budget managers in performance management. This role requires knowledge of non-profit and fund accounting, experience managing a team in a fast-paced environment, and a passion for working collaboratively across departments.
Specific Responsibilities
Finance
· Lead the annual budget process, monitor expenditures and variances, proactively update income and expense projections, initiate forecasts and updates.
· Work closely with budget managers to provide support and analyses for budgeting, forecasting, and long-term planning; identify risks and opportunities; support alignment with strategy.
· Ensure accounting policies, procedures, and controls are current, compliant, and adequate to protect the organization.
· Lead and support grants management team in overseeing grants and contracts in adherence with federal and foundation timelines, guidelines and projections.
· Participate in the design and tracking of key performance indicators, analyze data to support enhanced business decisions.
· Prepare monthly and ad hoc financial reports for internal stakeholders and the Board of Directors; participate in presentation of financial performance at Board meetings.
· Perform all balance sheet reconciliations (bank accounts, investments, pre-paid accounts, deposits, accruals, depreciation, etc.) and prepare month-end closings.
· Manage and track restricted and conditional revenue and maintain updated grid of release from restriction.
· File tax filings, registrations, and other legal requirements on a timely basis.
· Lead the annual financial audit.
Human Resources
· Responsible for all human resource functions including hiring practices, employee review policies, and other HR activities.
· Oversee payroll, benefits administration, recruiting, onboarding, off-boarding, employee check-ins and exit interviews, and other human resource needs.
· Assure compliance with applicable HR, employment and personnel laws and regulations across multiple states.
Operations
· Lead Tandem Global’s Operations team to maintain updated personnel and operations policies and procedures and ensure compliance.
· Oversee management and maintenance of office systems.
· Review organizational insurance policies and ensure adequate coverage.
· Ensure continuous compliance with state and federal registration and reporting obligations, including state charity registrations.
· Participate in development and implementation of new policies and procedures.
Skills & Qualifications
· Undergraduate degree in Finance or Accounting
· Thorough and complete understanding of GAAP and CAS
· 5-7 years of experience in a small or mid-sized non-profit organization
· Experience developing dynamic financial and operational models
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills
· Experience using QuickBooks required
· Highly detailed-oriented with a very low tolerance for errors
· Ability to take ownership, seek guidance and not require task-to-task management
· Aptitude for managing multiple tasks with many moving pieces
· High degree of proficiency with common technology tools including MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Microsoft Teams
· Ability to mirror Tandem Global’s values and associated competencies internally and externally
Work Environment
The position is included in Tandem Global’s dispersed workforce plan, providing the employee with a choice to work out of the organization’s Bethesda, MD office or from home. This position is mostly office based, with limited physical work. Occasional travel for internal events (staff retreats, board meetings or similar) is expected. This position includes some light physical work. Preference will be given to candidates in Eastern and Central Time Zones.
